LF of Trunk/Outfall Sewer Replacement
6

Projects with 138 Sewer Segments

Scope

The Westside Peachtree Basin program encompasses 6 projects with 138 sewer segments recommended for replacement, totaling approximately 16,187 linear feet of trunk and outfall sewer ranging from 10-inch to 15-inch diameters. Located in the northern portion of the City’s sanitary sewer system, the project area includes the Tanyard Creek and Clear Creek combined sewer areas.

Design services include surveying of each existing manhole with top and invert elevation recordings for all incoming and outgoing pipes, utilizing GIS data for ground surface elevations along replacement and new pipe segments to develop profile sections. Subsurface Utility Exploration (SUE) investigations identify buried utilities within the project area and potential conflicts for design and construction. CCTV data of existing pipe segments verifies lateral locations for open-cut replacement sections.

Sewer improvements utilize Basis of Design approaches to replace or re-align sewer segments to meet flow requirements, with provisions for rehabilitation, erosion control, and traffic control throughout construction.

Unique Challenges

One unique challenge on this project was land and easement acquisition, as most of the project involved bypassing and installation through homeowner properties. This challenge was overcome through considerable communication and partnership with the City of Atlanta, with weekly in person homeowner meetings to address concerns and develop solutions to keep the project moving forward. Another unique challenge on this project was acquiring all necessary permitting, with one area requiring coordination with GA Power, CSX Railroad, and a private data company. Starting early and communicating often was the recipe for success with this challenge.
