LF of Sekisui Spiral Wound Sewer Installed, 8"-36" In Diameter

Scope

Sewer system rehabilitation at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, the world’s busiest airport, requiring careful coordination to maintain continuous airport operations. Work includes 2,000 linear feet of open-cut sewer installation ranging from 8-inch to 10-inch diameter, 5,700 linear feet of sewer rehabilitation via Sekisui Spiral Wound lining ranging from 8-inch to 36-inch diameter, and 180 linear feet of 24-inch jack-and-bore installation.

Additional work encompasses grout abandonment of existing sanitary sewer lines and complete asphalt paving restoration. All construction activities were executed within the active airport environment, requiring extensive coordination with airport operations, airlines, and multiple stakeholders to ensure uninterrupted service at this critical international transportation hub.

Unique Challenges

Working in live sewer flows required rigorous safety protocols including constant air monitoring, PPE to prevent sewer contact, and strategic scheduling around low-flow periods. The airport environment presented unpredictable and limited access windows, demanding disciplined operations with no wasted time while working on active runways. Mixed face boring conditions were successfully addressed by deploying different cutting heads adapted to each encountered ground condition, ensuring continuous progress despite variable subsurface challenges.
