LF of Combined Jack-and-Bore
84"

Diameter Hand Mined Tunnel

Scope

Upsizing of existing sanitary sewer infrastructure under Peachtree Industrial Boulevard and throughout adjacent neighborhoods in Doraville, Georgia, to accommodate expanding population demands. The project includes three separate jack-and-bore installations ranging from 30-inch to 36-inch diameter totaling approximately 700 linear feet, replacement and installation of four precast manholes, and one 84-inch diameter, 130-linear-foot hand-mined tunnel.

A 16-foot diameter shaft excavated to 30 vertical feet serves dual purposes: receiving two jack-and-bore drives and providing access for new manhole installation. Pilot tube systems were deployed on applicable jack-and-bore operations to ensure accurate alignment beneath the heavily trafficked Peachtree Industrial Boulevard. Despite mixed face ground conditions, active bypass pumping operations, and proximity to residential neighborhoods, the project was completed on time and within budget.

Unique Challenges

This project presented significant challenges due to rapidly changing subsurface conditions and extremely limited site access, particularly along the heavily trafficked Peachtree Industrial Boulevard and within adjacent residential areas. Variable ground conditions, including mixed face soils, required constant evaluation and adjustment throughout construction.

To successfully navigate these conditions, the team adapted hand-tunneling means and methods in real time as the ground transitioned, ensuring both safety and production were maintained. Careful coordination was also required to manage active bypass pumping operations and minimize disruption to surrounding neighborhoods, all while maintaining precise alignment for jack-and-bore installations.
