Scope

Construction includes site clearing, rock blasting, excavation, dewatering, bypass pumping, backfill, and compaction operations. Major infrastructure components include the Crane Creek Sewer Basin Wet Weather Pump Station, 8 MG Equalization Storage Tank, and Diversion Structure, along with all accompanying yard piping, duct banks, and appurtenances.

The project features extensive sewer bypass pumping and dewatering operations, TBM tunnel installation under the existing railroad line on site, construction of a new permanent access road to the facility, and a temporary construction access road to the work area west of the railroad. SCADA programming is being established to effectively utilize the Storage Tank to meet the capacity needs identified in the Crane Creek Trunk Sewer, with the City of Columbia’s SCADA integrator (CITI) performing necessary control modifications for seamless system integration.

Unique Challenges

We dealt with extremely hard rock in the tunnel. This caused excessive cutter wear on TBM. We dealt with this challenge by constantly changing the heads on the cutters.
