Scope

This project consists of constructing an 80 million gallon per day (MGD) pumping station in the Congaree River, along with 48” and 54” raw water piping to transmit the water to the Columbia Canal WTP Raw Water Reservoir. This project provides resiliency for the Canal WTP if another failure of the Columbia Canal dike
occurs in the future.

The work of this project is located near the Western most end of Calhoun Street, adjacent to the Columbia Water Canal Treatment Plant. Construction is to include a new access road and bridge across the Canal to extend accessibility from Calhoun Street to the intake location in the limits of the Broad/Congaree River. Construction of the intake structure is located within the limits of the Broad/Congaree River.

Unique Challenges

The project is located in the river requiring a large coffer dam to be installed to allow for the construction of the new intake. Our civil crews had recently completed a similar coffer dam on the Chattahoochee and made quick work of this one to allow concrete work to stay on schedule.
