Scope

Relocation of almost 1,300 feet of combined sewer ranging from 18-inch to 54-inch diameter, along with trenchless installation of approximately 400 feet of PVC spiral wound liner (Sekisui lining) inside existing 60-inch RCP pipe near the intersection of Centennial Olympic Park Drive and Mitchell Street in the area known as the Gulch, now renamed Centennial Yards.

Ruby-Collins completed 620 feet of open-cut pipe installation, a 200-foot 42-inch bore under multiple active railroad tracks, and 460 feet of 84-inch hand-mined tunnel. The project required installation of five shafts up to 24 feet wide and 45 feet deep to access and execute the underground work. Following sewer relocation, the existing sewer was abandoned in place with cellular grout and the site was restored to existing conditions.

This technically complex urban utility relocation project earned ENR Southeast Regional Best Projects 2023 recognition as Best Water/Environment Project, demonstrating exceptional execution in challenging downtown Atlanta conditions while maintaining active railroad and street operations throughout construction.

Unique Challenges

This project was value engineered to save the client significant money due to the depths of the sewer. Ruby-Collins used trenchless technologies to accomplish most of the project, which saved time and money for the owner.
