LF of Pipe Installed, 36" In Diameter

Scope

Correction of capacity limitations in tributary sewers and trunks serving the western section of Clear Creek Combined Sewer Basin, with the most upstream section located west of Interstate 75/85. The Piedmont-Ponce New Diversion Sewer consists of approximately 2,020 linear feet of 36-inch diameter pipe running along Piedmont Avenue.

Work includes bypass pumping operations, CCTV inspection, and pipe replacement using multiple installation methods including open-cut, pipe-bursting, and jack-and-bore techniques. Services encompass rehabilitation, replacement, and installation of manholes and appurtenances throughout the system to enhance capacity and reliability for the Clear Creek Basin.

Unique Challenges

This project presented several unique challenges due to its location within a highly active urban corridor. Ongoing city events, including restrictions associated with the FIFA World Cup, required careful coordination of work hours, access, and traffic control to minimize disruption.

In addition, the alignment along Piedmont Avenue and proximity to major infrastructure, including MARTA Streetcar, introduced significant logistical and technical complexities. A critical component of the work involved tunneling beneath the streetcar system, requiring precise planning and execution to protect existing assets and maintain uninterrupted service.

These constraints, combined with the need to perform bypass pumping, multiple installation methods (open-cut, pipe bursting, and jack-and-bore), and ongoing system rehabilitation, demanded a highly adaptive approach to sequencing, coordination, and construction management to successfully deliver improvements to the Clear Creek Basin.
