This project involved underground utility access and rehabilitation along Auburn Avenue in Atlanta, Georgia, supporting critical repairs to an existing Georgia Power transmission line beneath and active roadway. The scope included excavation of two 8-foot diameter access shafts constructed within the roadway to depths of approximately 35–40 feet, with crews safely hand-mining 5-foot diameter tunnels extending 50 linear feet in both directions from each shaft to access and expose damaged sections of the transmission line.
Ruby-Collins partnered with specialty subcontractors to facilitate pipeline repairs, including installation of welded steel barrel enclosures at leak locations and application of cathodic wrap systems to restore and protect the pipeline. Following completion of repairs, all tunnels were filled with excavatable RHO test concrete to allow for future access if needed, access shafts were backfilled with controlled low-strength flowable fill, and full roadway restoration was completed, including asphalt and concrete replacement.
This project demonstrates expertise in deep shaft excavation, hand-mined tunneling, utility coordination, and urban infrastructure restoration within high-traffic environments while maintaining structural integrity and minimizing surface disruption.
