Job Overview

The Tunnel Laborer provides essential underground and ground-level support for trenchless operations. This role involves manual labor, material handling, and assisting in the setup and breakdown of shaft and tunnel equipment to ensure a productive and safe work environment.

Primary Duties

  • Site Preparation: Assist in the setup of deep shaft excavations, shoring systems, and tunnel portals.
  • Material Handling: Manage the transport of tunnel segments, pipes, and muck removal systems; assist with specialized lining installations (e.g., PVC spiral wound lining).
  • Tool Support: Operate basic power tools, jack leg drills, and cleaning equipment to maintain an efficient workspace.
  • Spotting & Signaling: Act as a spotter for crane operations and provide clear communication to the TBM Operator during pipe leads.
  • Safety Housekeeping: Maintain a clean and hazard-free work area both inside the tunnel and at the surface level.

Qualifications

  • Experience: 1+ year of general construction experience; underground, tunneling, or utility experience is a significant plus.
  • Skills: Ability to follow complex verbal instructions and work effectively as part of a tight-knit crew.
  • Physical Stamina: Must be able to lift 50-100+ lbs., climb ladders, and perform repetitive tasks in varied weather and underground conditions.
  • Reliability: Proven track record of punctuality, reliable transportation, and the ability to work out of town as required by project schedules.
  • Requirements: Must pass pre-employment drug screening/physical and be authorized to work in the US.
