Job Overview

The Trenchless Foreman is a key on-site leader responsible for the daily execution, safety, and productivity of bore crews on auger boring and jack-and-bore projects. This role provides direct, hands-on supervision of self-perform crews, ensuring pit excavation and shoring, machine setup, casing and carrier pipe installation, and site restoration are completed safely, efficiently, and to project specifications and quality standards.

Duties & Responsibilities

Execution & Quality Control

  • Oversee and direct daily field operations, ensuring crews meet production targets on each crossing, including pit excavation and shoring, boring machine setup, casing advancement, carrier pipe installation, grouting, and restoration.
  • Read, interpret, and accurately implement crossing plans, plan and profile drawings, and specifications to set and maintain proper line, grade, casing elevations, and pit locations.
  • Monitor line and grade throughout each bore and conduct quality checks on casing welds, spacers, end seals, and grouting to ensure compliance with project plans, specifications, and permit requirements while minimizing rework.
  • Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve on-site issues such as obstructions, unexpected soil or groundwater conditions, grade corrections, and material shortages to keep production moving forward smoothly.

Crew & Safety Leadership

  • Supervise and lead bore crews, ensuring team members are properly trained in auger boring machine operation, casing welding and handling, rigging, pit work, and general craftsmanship.
  • Enforce full compliance with OSHA regulations and company safety policies, serving as the frontline advocate for excavation and trench safety, shoring and pit access, confined spaces, rotating equipment hazards, and PPE compliance.
  • Oversee the safe operation, daily inspection, and basic maintenance of auger boring machines, augers, cutting heads, welders, pumps, vehicles, and heavy equipment assigned to the crew.

Project Coordination & Reporting

  • Coordinate daily with the Project Superintendent to schedule casing and pipe deliveries, equipment moves, labor allocations, utility locates, traffic control, and railroad or DOT flagging in alignment with look-ahead schedules.
  • Monitor daily footage, casing and material inventory, and consumables, ensuring supplies are handled properly and stored securely on-site.
  • Maintain accurate, timely daily logs, including crew timesheets, footage installed, line and grade readings, safety huddle notes, inspections, and documentation of obstructions, unforeseen site conditions, or utility conflicts.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Experience: Minimum 5+ years of experience in auger boring, jack-and-bore, trenchless, or underground utility construction, with a proven track record of supervising field crews.
  • Technical Expertise: Strong foundational knowledge of auger boring and jack-and-bore methods, including pit layout and shoring, machine setup, casing welding, line and grade control, ground conditions, and carrier pipe installation.
  • Plan Reading: Proficient in reading and interpreting crossing plans, plan and profile drawings, specifications, geotechnical reports, and grade information.
  • Equipment Knowledge: Hands-on experience with auger boring machines and the ability to safely coordinate excavators, loaders, cranes, and lifting activities within bore pits and tight work zones.
  • Mindset: A strong commitment to safety and quality with a “do it right the first time” mentality and a focus on mentoring crew members.
  • Leadership & Communication: Clear communication and problem-solving skills necessary to direct a crew and collaborate productively with superintendents and project managers.
  • Compliance: Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record (MVR), ability to pass a pre-employment drug screening/physical, and authorized to work in the US.
