Job Overview

The Superintendent is a senior-level field leader responsible for the high-level management, strategic oversight, and execution of self-perform crews and subcontractors across one or more major civil infrastructure project sites. This role focuses on long-term planning, resource allocation, and the comprehensive coordination of heavy civil construction, water/wastewater structures, and complex utility systems.

Duties & Responsibilities

Strategic Oversight & Quality Assurance

  • Manage and optimize the performance of multiple field crews and subcontractors.
  • Ensure consistent production and cross-functional coordination across all project phases.
  • Review and validate structural drawings, civil site plans, and shop drawings to identify potential design conflicts or issues before execution.
  • Establish/Enforce quality control protocols and lead the resolution of complex field engineering challenges.

Safety & Compliance Leadership

  • Serve as the primary authority on job site safety, ensuring all foremen, crews, and subcontractors maintain 100% compliance with OSHA standards and company safety policies.
  • Conduct regular site safety audits to mitigate risks associated with deep excavations, heavy equipment operations, and confined spaces.
  • Ensure all environmental, erosion control (SWPPP), and regulatory compliance measures are implemented and maintained.

Logistics, Planning, & Profitability

  • Develop, maintain, and manage look-ahead schedules, coordinating closely with Project Managers and the General Superintendent to align various construction phases.
  • Oversee the strategic allocation and utilization of heavy equipment, tools, and materials across the project site(s).
  • Monitor project budgets, labor costs, and production rates, actively reviewing daily reports to identify variances and maintain project profitability.
  • Approve crew timecards, track material yields, and maintain detailed documentation for as-built records, daily logs, and potential change orders.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Experience: Minimum 10+ years of experience in heavy civil, water/wastewater treatment plant, or underground utility construction, with at least 3–5 years in a supervisory or management role.
  • Technical Expertise: Broad knowledge of heavy civil construction methodologies, including structural concrete, deep excavations, site logistics, and complex piping/process systems.
  • Plan Reading: Advanced proficiency in reading and interpreting comprehensive civil, structural, and mechanical blueprints and specifications.
  • Financial & Operational Acumen: Strong understanding of production rates, cost tracking, resource scheduling, and budget management.
  • Leadership: Proven ability to manage multi-disciplinary crews, coordinate subcontractors, and mentor subordinate Foremen in technical and leadership skills.
  • Communication: Strong negotiation and interpersonal skills for interacting productively with project owners, engineers, municipal inspectors, and safety officials.
  • Compliance: Authorized to work in the US, valid driver’s license & clean driving record (MVR), ability to pass pre-employment drug screening/physical.
