This role focuses on long-term planning, resource allocation, site logistics, and coordination of multiple road, railroad, and waterway crossings across varying ground conditions.
Duties & Responsibilities
Strategic Oversight & Quality Assurance
- Manage and optimize the performance of multiple bore crews and subcontractors performing auger boring and jack-and-bore crossings.
- Ensure consistent production and coordination across pit excavation and shoring, boring, casing and carrier pipe installation, grouting, and restoration phases.
- Review and validate crossing plans, plan and profile drawings, geotechnical reports, and pit and shoring designs to identify design conflicts or constructability issues before execution.
- Establish and enforce quality-control protocols for line and grade, casing welds, and grouting, and lead resolution of obstructions, difficult ground conditions, and other complex field challenges.
Safety & Compliance Leadership
- Serve as the primary authority on job-site safety, ensuring all Foremen, crews, and subcontractors comply with OSHA standards, company policies, and railroad, DOT, and owner safety requirements.
- Conduct regular site safety audits to address risks associated with excavation and shoring, deep pits, heavy equipment, rotating augers, lifting operations, confined spaces, and work near live traffic and rail lines.
- Ensure environmental, erosion-control, dewatering, permit, inspection, and regulatory requirements are implemented and maintained throughout construction.
Logistics, Planning, & Profitability
- Develop, maintain, and manage look-ahead schedules with Project Managers and the General Superintendent, coordinating crossing sequence, permit windows, railroad flagging, and equipment moves.
- Oversee the strategic allocation and use of bore crews, subcontractors, auger boring machines, heavy equipment, cranes, tools, and materials across multiple crossings.
- Monitor project budgets, labor costs, and production rates, actively reviewing daily reports to identify variances and maintain project profitability.
- Approve crew timecards, track footage and material quantities, and maintain documentation for as-built profiles, daily logs, inspections, delays, and potential change orders.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Experience: Minimum 5+ years of experience in auger boring, jack-and-bore, trenchless, or underground utility construction, with at least 3–5 years in a supervisory or management role.
- Technical Expertise: Broad knowledge of auger boring and jack-and-bore methods, including pit design and shoring, machine selection and setup, casing installation, line and grade control, ground conditions, dewatering, and grouting.
- Plan Reading: Advanced proficiency in reading and interpreting crossing plans, plan and profile drawings, geotechnical reports, shoring designs, and specifications.
- Financial & Operational Acumen: Strong understanding of production rates, cost tracking, resource scheduling, and budget management.
- Leadership: Proven ability to manage multiple bore crews, coordinate subcontractors and permitting agencies, and mentor Assistant Superintendents and Foremen in technical and leadership skills.
- Communication: Strong negotiation and interpersonal skills for coordinating with project owners, railroad and DOT representatives, engineers, inspectors, safety officials, and project management teams.
- Compliance: Authorized to work in the US, valid driver’s license & clean driving record (MVR), ability to pass pre-employment drug screening/physical.
