Job Overview
The Pipe Layer is a skilled craft role responsible for the precision installation of large-diameter sanitary sewer, water, and stormwater systems. This role operates primarily in the trench, ensuring that piping (DIP, CCFRPM, Steel, PCCP, etc.) is set to exact engineering grades and alignments.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Precision Installation: Lay, align, and join large-diameter pipe using mechanical, flanged, and restrained joint systems. Ensure correct bedding and haunching to protect system integrity.
- Technical Verification: Use pipe lasers and transit levels to verify slopes, inverts, and alignments according to civil profile sheets.
- Material Mastery: Expertly handle and join a multitude of materials, including DIP, CCFRPM, Steel, PVC, HDPE, and PCCP.
- Rigging & Signaling: Manage the rigging of pipe segments and provide precise signaling to Operators for safe placement in the trench.
- Trench Safety: Direct the setup of shoring/shielding systems and monitor trench wall stability and atmospheric conditions for confined space entry.
- Testing & Quality: Support hydrostatic and air testing of completed reaches; ensure all as-built data is accurately reflected in field notes.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Experience: Proven experience in pipelaying, specifically within underground construction/utility or heavy civil environments.
- Travel & Location: Must live within a commutable distance to the job site and be willing to work out of town during the week. Note: Travel per diem is provided, and crews are home on the weekends.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency with checking grades and interpreting specifications.
- Physical Requirements: Ability to perform strenuous physical labor for extended periods in outdoor elements (extreme heat, rain, or cold). Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs regularly, kneel, crouch, and safely navigate active construction terrains.
- Safety Mindset: A strict commitment to company safety policies and OSHA standards, specifically regarding personal protective equipment (PPE), trench safety, fall protection, and working safely around heavy equipment.
- Compliance: Must be authorized to work in the US and pass a pre-employment drug screening/physical.
